When we placed the P35 Platinum as a reference for our P5K Premium review back then, the result was not very fantastic.

This time round, we have took the P5K Premium, which is arguably one of the fastest, if not the fastest Intel P35 motherboard out there to compete with the P35 Platinum. The latest BIOS were ensured to be onboard before we went about with our tests.

Each individual test is run after a reboot on the system is made and the system has reached an idle state at the desktop. The latest drivers as of mid-September 2007 were loaded.

The ASUS P5K Premium barges its way though all the benchmarks. It seems that MSI's P35 Platinum has no answer to the P5K Premium's performance...

There is no fight here again. The P5K Premium brushes off the P35 Platinum with ease, with the exception of the PCMark05 bench, where the latter managed to squeeze just 2 points over the P5K Premium.

Interestingly, the P35 Platinum starts to get some attention in the gaming department. ASUS' P5K Premium bulldozed the P35 Platinum in Company of Heroes, but the latter held off the competition for Quake 4 and Unreal Tournament 2004. The results we obtained for gaming is a rather mixed bag.

With the new BIOS, the MSI was able to achieve the FSB that we did with both ASUS offerings some time ago. This time, due to the CPU/DRAM divider that we set, the memory is actually running faster than it was on the P5K Premium. A quick SuperPI run reveals that what we got is just clockspeed and not performance. There is a bug though, the memory is running at 5-5-5-15, but CPU-Z reports it as 5-8-8-.

MSI's P35 Platinum has shown performance improvement with the new BIOS, but it is still a bit slow in the speed department. Another gripe we have is the number of times the board powers off/on when we overclock it; it powers on, then off, then on, and off again, before switching on for the final time and on it's way.

But nevertheless, board features are ample and there are no issues with build quality. The Circu Pipe is doing a pretty good job in cooling the components on the motherboard, but probably they could do away with the extension that leads all the way to the front of the DDR2 slots.微星P35 白金版 - P35中的佼佼者(2) - 通古斯卡 - 大道至简

The Platinum retails for high $300. It isn't very expensive if you were to consider the latest Intel X38 boards. How about getting a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 board which goes for, uh, $489? Or the ASUS Maximus Formula, which would probably rocket past the low $500 mark? If you definitely need CrossFire (or even SLi for some reason on Intel and hope there are hacked drivers for it), then perhaps you could consider the Intel X38.

We believe that the Intel X38 (and the X48) requires DDR3 in order to excel. What is lacking in the Intel C2D/X combo is bandwidth. We should be expecting some serious performance numbers with quick DDR3 memories. But alas, prices of DDR3 aren't attractive at all at this point of time. It's just too bad because most of us do not have the dough to fit both a quick X38 motherboard and blazing fast DDR3 memory. DDR2 prices are dropping as we speak, together with P35 boards that are comparatively much cheaper, that makes the P35 platform still a very attractive solution for both high-end users as well as overclocking enthusiasts.
