微星P35白金版 - P35中的佼佼者

Giving the lackluster performance of motherboards using Intel's X38 chipset, the P35 chipset that was thought to be relegated-sooner-than-expected has been given a lifeline. Performance difference between a fast P35 board and a X38 board is negligible. You could probably save a hundred bucks and invest the cash on a better graphics card.

With the minimal quantity of Intel X38-based boards available in the market, we will be taking a look at an Intel P35-based board from one of the more popular manufacturers - the MSI P35 Platinum which utilises inexpensive DDR2 memories.

The box is simple, with no bling whatsoever. Key features of the motherboard are mentioned on the covers.

Let us take a quick look at the board's specifications:

The board layout is neat, complete with contrasty DIMM slots and other connectors.

This board uses a pretty standard 4-phase PWM circuitry. Probably MSI could do something in this department, as other brands have moved on to PWMs that have a number of phases that is double of what MSI is having now for quite a long while already.

In order to run dual channel, you have to put one stick in the green slot and the other in the orange slot. Confusing isn't it? Other manufacturers colour-code their DIMM slots such that you place your RAMs in slots of the same colour to run dual channel.

The interesting Circu-Pipe takes up quite a bit of space on the motherboard. Lots of pipes and more surface area.

The board's PCI slots layout is good. There is a gap of two slots between the two PCI Express x16 slots. You won't get toasted bread and stuff like that even if you run CrossFire on this board with dual-slot graphic cards. There will still be a gap of one slot between the two graphics cards.

The various headers are colour-coded for easy reference. The IDE connector is also located along the edge of the board, unlike the Asus P5K Premium which has its IDE connector smack in the middle. The SATA ports are moved slightly away from the PCI Express x16 slot also, preventing any obstruction if we have long video cards installed.

Nothing much on the rear I/O plate, but we have two eSATA ports on the back. Great news for people who connect, or plan to buy a lot of external storage.

Looking closer at the board, we identify the various chips placed on this board.

For audio, we have the 8-channel Realtek ALC888.

Firewire is controlled by the VIA Fire IIM VT6308P, which is a single-chip low powered 2-port 400Mbps controller.

A Gigabit Ethernet LOM is present on this board, and it is also from Realtek.

The Fintek is a Super IO chip that handles the hardware monitoring function on the P35 Platinum.

ICS Clockgen...

A red button is placed on the board, and this is used to reset BIOS settings in case things go wrong. This is something handy for overclockers. They've decided to do away with switching jumper positions which can be quite annoying if you've everything assembled in your case and movement is restricted.

However, not every board is perfect. There are a few minor problems, and how they will affect the user will depend on his/her usage patterns.

The first problem is the location of the 8-pin ATX power connector. The lowered position is welcomed by users who have computer cases where the power supply is located at the bottom of the case. But when you decide to mount a huge heatsink, obstruction may occur depending on where you position the fan on the heatsink.

There is not enough clearance around the Circu-Pipe. I have slim fingers and am able to squeeze through to lock the push-pin. If you have bigger fingers and faced with such a situation, probably you'll be bending a few fins just to lock the heatsink down.

And here comes a big problem... You can't change your RAMs or install new sticks without removing your graphics card first.

The P35 Platinum uses an AMI BIOS. They have been using AMI BIOS for a very long time already.

User Profiles is available with the latest BIOS we obtained. It allows users to save two profiles, probably one could be for 24/7 usage, one could be for benchmark purposes only. Well, it all depends on the individual.

The Cell Menu contains all the settings for overclocking and tweaking the computer.

The D.O.T Control is somewhat similar to ASUS' A.I Overclocking feature. It enables the motherboard to automatically overclock the system.

The maximum FSB allowed to be set is 600MHz.

PCI Express frequency can be adjusted all the way to 200MHz. I don't know of anyone who would go that far anyway.

These are the maximum voltages (all in red) available on this board. (Notice a mistake? 3.30V option for VDIMM, but the Help Item says that maximum is only 2.60V.)

Configurable SPD timings are found in the Advanced DRAM Configuration, which is also in the Cell Menu page.

A simple hardware monitor included in the BIOS. The CPU fan speed as well as one system fan speed can be controlled.
